Some people wait for weekends while others wait for paydays. Some people love the company of a crowd while others want to spend their time alone. Some people want the limelight, and others just aim to create change to make a difference. Every individual seeks happiness in his own unique way. This is because happiness matters a lot to all of us. How people perceive happiness Happiness is a dependent emotion based on an individual’s perspective. It is natural for us human beings to feel a wide range of emotions and defining happiness is not easy. Some people define happiness as a feeling when they get what they want, some see happiness when all things around them are exactly what they think they should be, while others define happiness as having internal peace.Happiness according to Experts Happiness is about being able to have the best times. According to Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard, “Happiness is a deep sense of flourishing, not a mere pleasurable feeling or fleeting emotion but an optimal state of being.” Trying to live a happy life is not about pretending to be joyful or denying the negative emotions that have come all the time. It is a more constant state of being that persists even if at certain times you can experience sadness over undesired events in life such as illness, loss of a loved one, conflicts, wars, human strife and suffering.Most of our physical, mental, and social problems come from our inability to handle our emotions. People spend more energy on avoiding their emotion rather than accepting it. As what the clinical psychologist Ryan Howes, Ph.D. stated, “Happiness is associated with balanced lifestyle, balanced understanding, accepting emotions, and constant growth.”The Holy Bible also mentions the requisites for happiness:Psalm 37:4. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Ecclesiastes 2:26. To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.Matthew 25:23. “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” How to achieve genuine happiness In the pursuit of genuine happiness, there are several scientifically-proven activities that will help. Rather than spending most of the time thinking about what should be done next, we should take charge of our happiness by choosing to engage in physical activities and creating positive vibes whether at home or with other people.Here are some ways on how we find and have the happiness that we all want to have:1. Accept what you truly feel, either positive or negative feelings. Denying what we feel tend to lead to anxiety. Taking daily risks could be healthy and rewarding.2. Challenge yourself each day, whether asserting yourself, talking to someone you’ve never met before, doing things new to you, or anything that will take you out of your comfort zone. Sometimes, it can feel like we are robots on an autopilot. This can bring about boredom. Start your day on a positive note.4. Relax and enjoy everything in the morning. Get rid of things that make you feel cheerless. Monitoring your creative activities and doing what you love replaces the negative thoughts that go through your head.5. Smile and laugh more often. According to the study conducted by psychologist Robert Zajonc, those who “smiled” felt good while those who “pouted” felt worse throughout the day. On the other hand, kids laugh about 200 times per day while adults laugh an average of 15 times a day. As we get older, the times we laugh diminish, thus making us more susceptible to stress and depression. When we smile or laugh, a biological process works in our brain causing us to be happy. The happy brain chemicals- dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin and endorphin, work together and for this reason, our moods are lifted. If we smile more often, it could help us feel better about our lives and our smile will make other people smile as well. It becomes a happier world for everybody.Environment matters 6. Surround yourself with positive vibes, either be people, things, or sounds. Our surroundings affect our well-being. Our favorite music lifts our mood. Friends and happy people can influence our moods. Find inspiration in everything, from subscribing to a daily journal, to listening to good music, and to talking with happy people.7. Spend time with people who are very special to you and take time to pray and praise God. Spend time with your family. Happiness should start at home. As you get older, true happiness in not how much you make or how many things you have. It is finding joy and calmness with your loving family. Surround yourself with your family, relatives, and good friends. They are the ones who will give you the greatest happiness you want. Do your best to become a very much desired companion for them, too. Do things that will make your family bonds stronger and solid. In the quest of finding genuine happiness, we cannot simply rely on ourselves.Happiness is an endless process. Give the world the best you have and you’ll have the happiness you want. Make God the center of your life and your family for He is the main reason why you live a happy life. Happiness is health and health is happiness. Keep your source of inner joy intact in your heart and mind, and the stream of happiness will flow freely to benefit yourself and humankind.
